Brett Favre’s number will be retired by the Packers ... eventually
Apparently there are a lot of Green Bay fans out there waiting for the Packers to retire Brett Favre’s jersey number, even though he didn’t leave the team on the best of terms and eventually ended up playing for hated rival Minnesota Vikings.
Well, for you fanatics out there, we have good news and bad news.
The good news is that it’s looking more and more likely that Favre will in fact receive the honor you feel he deserves.
The bad news is you may have to do something to help the circulation in your extremities, because that feeling of pins and needles may last awhile.
In his monthly column on the Packers’ website, team president and CEO Mark Murphy addressed a question from a fan regarding the issue. He said the team would love to retire No. 4 sometime before the ol’ gunslinger is inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a foregone conclusion to happen on the first ballot in 2016.
“We do want to bring Brett back into the fold, and plan on retiring his number,” Murphy said. “He deserves to have his number retired for what he accomplished, and meant to the Packers, during his time here.”
But Murphy suggested it still might not happen right away, saying that enough time needs to pass to make sure no one at Lambeau Field that day is holding any grudges.
“The timing has to be right for both Brett and the organization,” Murphy said. “I know that many of our fans were upset that Brett played for the Vikings. As time goes by, though, I think wounds are healed and people focus more on the great things he did for the team during his 16 years here.”
