Billy Cundiff signing gives 49ers two inconsistent kickers

Billy Cundiff is back!

You didn’t really think the journeyman kicker was gone for good after the Washington Redskins cut him earlier this season, did you?

Cundiff appears ready to play for his sixth NFL team -- and second coach with the last name Harbaugh -- after signing with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday.

The nine-year veteran, who first tried out for San Francisco back in November, will either replace or at least provide competition for current 49ers kicker David Akers, who is just 29 for 42 this year after making 44 of 52 attempts last year. Akers is only seven for 13 from 40-49 yards.

Cundiff also struggled this season, going seven of 12 before being released by the Redskins on Oct. 9. He spent the previous two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, who are coached by John Harbaugh, brother of 49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh.

After a Pro Bowl year with the Ravens in 2010, making 26 of his 29 attempts, Cundiff went 28 of 37 during the regular season in 2011 before missing a potential game-tying 32-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the AFC championship game. He was cut during the off-season.

The 49ers have a little time to figure out their kicker situation. They have this weekend off after earning the No. 2 seed in the NFC.
