Aaron Hernandez was indicted on first-degree murder charge Thursday by a Massachusetts grand jury.

Hernandez, a Pro Bowl tight end released by the New England Patriots in June upon his arrest on murder and weapons charges, has pleaded not guilty to those charges. He is being held in jail without bail.

If convicted, Hernandez could face life in prison without parole. Authorities are also investigating his possible connection to a double homicide in Boston last summer.

One of Hernandez’s friends, Ernest Wallace, also was indicted by a Bristol County grand jury on a charge of being an accessory after the fact of first-degree murder, according to the Boston Globe, citing the Bristol County Superior Court clerk’s office.

Wallace faces a maximum sentence of seven years.

Prosecutors say Hernandez orchestrated the killing of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, whose bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park near the home of the former Patriots player.
