Rams notes: Eric Weddle to have offseason surgeries, is uncertain about NFL future
Safety Eric Weddle, who completed his 13th NFL season, said after the Rams’ 31-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday that he would have knee and shoulder surgeries and that he had not yet made a decision about his future.
“When I’m out there, I’m 100%,” said Weddle, 34. “But I’ve got some things I need to get fixed before I even remotely think about playing.… We’ll see what happens, but 13 years is a long time.
“Who would have ever thought?”
Weddle played nine seasons with the Chargers and three with the Baltimore Ravens before the Rams signed him in March. Weddle, a six-time Pro Bowl player, signed a two-year, $11.5-million contract that included $5.2 million in guarantees, according to overthecap.com. The deal also included a $1,000,001 option bonus for 2020 due by the end of 2019 league year in March.
The Rams finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs for the first time in coach Sean McVay’s three seasons.
The Rams are important enough in L.A. to have decisions scrutinized, from signing Jared Goff to a record extension to reducing Todd Gurley’s role.
Weddle said last week that he would not be surprised if the Rams go with Taylor Rapp and John Johnson as starting safeties and move on without him. He reiterated that Sunday.
Weddle said he had not yet made a decision about his future.
“Nothing is set in stone but it’s been a great run,” he said. “No regrets, baby.”
Higbee stays hot
Tight end Tyler Higbee caught eight passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Higbee fell 16 yards short of 100 yards or more in receiving yardage in five consecutive games.
Higbee was targeted a team-high 12 times.
Receivers Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods each caught seven passes, including one for a touchdown.
Kupp finished the season with a team-best 94 catches for 1,161 yards and a team-best 10 touchdowns –- all career bests for the three-year veteran. Woods caught a career-best 90 passes for 1,134 yards and two touchdowns.
The decade saw the Lakers stumble, the Rams return to town and to the Super Bowl, and the Dodgers fail to win a World Series. Oh, and the Balls stole headlines.
Cory Littleton and Michael Brockers injured
Linebacker Cory Littleton suffered a chest bruise and defensive lineman Michael Brockers suffered a left ankle injury during the game.
Littleton left the game and did not return after making several key plays that helped the Rams finish the season with a 9-7 record.
Littleton recovered a fumble after a snap bounced off the chest of Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. He also was credited with a sack.
Littleton finished the season with a team-best 134 tackles. The pending unrestricted free agent said this week that he would welcome the opportunity to re-sign with the Rams, but Littleton could be a salary-cap casualty.
Brockers was injured late in the third quarter on a play near the goal line. He was assisted off the field and rode a cart to the locker room. After the game, he wore a brace on lower his leg and walked with crutches.
Brockers also is a pending unrestricted free agent.
