London Olympics: What to watch for on Wednesday
There are seemingly thousands of Olympics events on TV every day. Here’s what events to watch for today.
SWIMMING
Not one of the top nights, but it’s still interesting. Kathleen Hersey is the fastest qualifier in the women’s 200-meter butterfly. But she’s better known as the architect of the “Call Me Maybe” swim team video that has gone viral. There is also a gold hope in Nathan Adrian in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, and Missy Franklin returns to the pool as part of the 800-meter freestyle relay.
CYCLING
The U.S. has a decent chance to get a medal in the women’s time trial. Kristin Armstrong is the defending gold medalist, but she suffered a broken collarbone in late May. She says she’s fully recovered, but everyone will know more by the end of the race. Also, a contender could be Amber Neben, who won at the world championships in 2008.
FENCING
You don’t think of the U.S. as a power in fencing, but it has one powerful competitor. Mariel Zagunis is looking to win her third straight gold in women’s saber. She was only the second fencer to win a gold medal for the U.S. Zagunis was the flag bearer for the U.S. at the opening ceremony, so she clearly has the respect of the delegation.
BOXING
The U.S. boxing team won its first four bouts and then lost its next two. Wednesday should tip the scales one way or the other on how successful the team will be. Joseph Diaz Jr. fights No. 1 seed Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba in the bantamweight class. Making their debuts will be Michael Hunter in the heavyweight division and Dominic Breazeale in super-heavyweight.
