Horse racing newsletter: Del Mar concludes successful season
Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome to our horse racing newsletter as Louis Rabaut looks at the correlation between 2-year-old winners and Kentucky Derby winners.
Before we get too far into this newsletter, you have to marvel at the success of this now concluded Del Mar meeting. First, there were no racing and training deaths, matching what Santa Anita did in its abbreviated meeting.
The last racing or training death on either of Southern California’s signature tracks was Sept. 5 at Del Mar. That makes almost three months without an exercise-induced fatality. Considering what went on last year, this is quite the accomplishment. Still got more to go, but it seems have if safety protocols may be making a difference. At least that’s the hope.
Second, Del Mar’s mutuel handle was up 33% over the 15-day racing season. Another benchmark of success.
“A terrific meet on all levels,” said Joe Harper, Del Mar’s chief executive. “First and foremost, the horses and people who care for them were safe. Wagering, which fuels the industry’s economic engine, exceeded expectations and the racing product was once again topnotch.”
Finally, the average field size was 8.1 runners a race, up from 7.4 last year during this meeting.

Stewards’ rulings
Just a few stewards’ rulings to report this week. We’ll get right to them.
--Trainer Karen Headley was fined $1,000 for failing to report in time that Tallemark had been gelded, resulting in the scratch of the 3-year-old in the first race on Aug. 31 at Del Mar. Karen Headley, the substitute trainer for her father Bruce, acknowledged her mistake and took full responsibility.
--Jockey Eswan Flores was suspended three days (Nov. 20, 21 and 22) when he used his riding crop more than six times on Mucha Woman in the third race on Nov. 8. Mucha Woman won by a neck. It was Flores’ fourth violation in the past 60 days.
--The connections of Smiling to Excess were forced to give up the horse’s second-place finish and all purse money after the presence of gabapentin, used in pain management, was found in the horse’s urine. The horse ran on Dec. 14, 2019 at Los Alamitos in the second race. The owner, Ka Hung Keene Wong, had to forfeit $6,000, trainer Paul Aguirre $600 and jockey Agapito Delgadillo $168. None of those penalized showed for the hearing.
--Jockey Juan Hernandez was fined $200 when he failed to show in time to ride Miss Alegria in the second race on Nov. 8. He was returning from the Breeders’ Cup and argued adamantly that it was not his fault because the COVID test he was required to take was issued late. Miss Alegria finished sixth in the six-horse race with Edwin Maldonado aboard.
--Jockey Umberto Rispoli was fined $200 when he failed to show in time to ride A Melis in the second race on Nov. 8. He was returning from the Breeders’ Cup and argued adamantly that it was not his fault because the COVID test he was required to take was issued late. A Melis finished second in the race with Drayden Van Dyke aboard.
--Jockey Abel Cedillo was fined $500 for using his riding crop more than six times with multiple strikes while aboard Just Grace in the sixth race on Nov. 13. Just Grace won by half-a-length. Even though it was Cedillo’s first offense in the past 60 days, a majority of the stewards believed an increased financial penalty was warranted. Steward Luis Jauregui voted for a three-day suspension.
--Apprentice jockey Jessica Pyfer was fined $200 when she used her riding crop more than six times while aboard Conquest Cobra in the fourth race on Nov. 14. Conquest Cobra finished third. Pyfer said she lost count and the stewards suggested when she loses count to top using her crop.
Louis Rabaut on 2-year-olds
Our Kentucky correspondent and podcast host Louis Rabaut takes a look at the correlation between 2-year-old winners and success in the Kentucky Derby. Louis, what did you discover?
“With the closing of the Del Mar and Churchill meets, I always start to wonder: have we already watched the Kentucky Derby and Oaks winners? How predictive are 2-year-old results?
“When talking recent Derby winners, the results are mixed: the four most recent Derby winners combined for one win as 2-year-olds, and that was Authentic’s maiden special weight win at Del Mar last November. Add I’ll Have Another, who won his debut in July, then not again until February of his 3-year-old campaign.
“And then, the total opposite: California Chrome, American Pharoah, and Nyquist. Chrome ran seven times as a 2-year-old, winning three races; Pharoah ran three times at 2, winning two Grade 1s; Nyquist famously won five times at 2, four in graded stakes, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Those three combined for six Triple Crown wins, and a bunch of great memories (and earnings, and stud fees, etc.).
“I love historical trends in predicting winners of major stakes. My favorite is probably the Federico Tesio stakes, run at nine furlongs prior to the Preakness. Only one horse has won the Tesio and gone on to win the Preakness, and that was the last Maryland-bred to win Baltimore’s jewel: Deputed Testamony in 1983. In other words: toss the Tesio winner from the Preakness Day late pick 4. He ain’t winnin’.
“The Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, a 2-year-old Derby points race, was run at Churchill on Saturday. Keepmeinmind won, earning 10 points. He is up to 18 points; this year, South Bend ran in the Derby with 18 points. If 2021 is more like a normal year, Keepmeinmind will likely need 20 or so more points to qualify.
“I bring up the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes as a predictor. It’s a terrific predictor of who won’t run well on the first Saturday in May, making it the Tesio of 2-year-old races. Since 2010, only four horses have won the KJCS, and even run in the Derby: Enticed (finished 14th in the 2018 Derby), McCracken (eighth in 2017), Tapiture (15th in 2014), and Gemologist (16th in 2012). While I certainly wish the best for Keepmeinmind’s connections, including trainer Robertino Diodoro, I don’t think they need to book hotel rooms in Baltimore for the weekend of May 15, or Long Island the first weekend in June.
“But what about the fillies? On our podcast, we talk about falling in love with the fillies, as they’re likely to run longer. Think about this past year: if a colt had the year Swiss Skydiver did, there would be no thought except to send him to stud. Monomoy Girl sells at Keeneland for $9.5M, and they decide to run her again. Simply put, this would never happen with male horses of their respective calibers.
“The Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes were run at Churchill this past Saturday, a race for 2-year-old fillies going a 1 1/16 of a mile for $200,000. The gray Travel Column rallied late for the win, and the 10 Oaks points awarded the winner. She ran third earlier in the Alcibaides at Keeneland, earning an additional two points there.
“Recent winners of the Golden Rod include Finite (2019), who has run well and won this year; Carina Mia (2015), who went on to win the Eight Belles and the Grade 1 Acorn; and of course, Rachel Alexandra, who won every single horse race run in 2009* (*ok, she went 8-8-0-0 in 2009). Prior to Rachel, the last filly to win the Golden Rod and then the Oaks was Silverbulletday in 1998/99. You may remember her, as she was a Bob Baffert trainee, and Gary Stevens the jockey.
“So, while the Golden Rod has produced fillies that have gone on to worthy careers, it, too, is largely a predictor of who won’t be winning on April 30. As you head to the futures wagers, watch the movement on these winners: Keepmeinmind moved from 23/1 to 19/1, so only a modest move. I guess all the futures bettors already knew the Jockey Club-Derby correlation.
“Prediction: Keepmeinmind follows form, and qualifies for the Derby but runs 10th or worse; Travel Column, a similar result. She doesn’t feel like a Rachel Alexandra or Silverbulletday. But hey, they’re only trends. That’s why they run the races.”

Del Mar review
The final day stakes races proved a worthy ending to a really good weekend of turf races. Let’s look at them.
Grade 3 $100,000 Cecil B. Demille Stakes: Longshot Beer Can Man ran a smart race just off the pace before jockey Juan Hernandez moved him off the rail and found a hole and won this one-mile turf race for 2-year-olds by half-a-length. Beer Can Man had been running at Indiana Downs before being bought and moved to the barn of Mark Glatt in Southern California.
Beer Can Man paid $41.20, $14.80 and $10.60. Caisson was second and Commander Khai finished third.
Mark Glatt (winning trainer): “We’ve had him about six weeks. We entered him the first weekend of the meeting, thinking we could run then and then come back in this race. But that race didn’t go. So [the owners] told me to get him ready to go a mile. I was a little skeptical to be honest, but the horse relaxed great, Juan [Hernandez] put a nice ride on him and he got the money.”
Juan Hernandez (winning jockey): “One jump out of there he came [back] to me. He settled real well. I just found me a spot tracking leaders and I was happy. At the quarter pole I asked him to go and he did. He really fired. He didn’t want to let horses go past him, either. He’s a nice horse.”
Grade 1 $300,000 Matriarch Stakes. The final stakes race of the fall season was for fillies and mares going a mile on the turf. It should come as no surprise that the winner, Viadera, was trained by Chad Brown. Joel Rosario was the jockey. It was the fourth time Brown has won this race.
It was also the fourth stakes win of the weekend for Brown having also won the Grade 3 Red Carpet, Grade 3 Jimmy Durante and Grade 1 Hollywood Derby.
Viadera rallied in the stretch to barely win by a nose over stablemate Blowout.
Viadera paid $12.80, $5.80 and $3.80. Blowout was second and Juliet Foxtrot finished third.
Jose Hernandez (assistant trainer for Chad Brown) “This weekend has been amazing. I didn’t know which filly [of the stablemates] was the winner, but I’m happy it turned out to be Viadera. My boss is an amazing trainer and I just do my best for him. It’s an amazing job for me and I love the horses. In the future, I don’t know when it would be, if Chad wanted to come out here with a string, I’d like that. We like it out here.”
Joel Rosario (winning jockey): “Whew. I had to work for that one. She’s a good filly, a really good filly. But she makes you work. I had to stay after her. She can run, though, there’s no doubt. I’m lucky that Chad Brown gives me an opportunity like this. Grass horses and especially fillies. He’s the best.”

SUPERSTITION closest in pursuit in the early going, took aim two wide into the stretch, drew alongside GREG'S DIVA inside the furlong grounds and wore down rival to get up late. GREG'S DIVA sped to the front and angled to the inside, roused at the three-sixteenths pole, met challenger from the outside in the final furlong, fought gamely to the wire but could not stave off the winner. AN EDDIE SURPRISE chased three then two wide on the turn, tipped out and outkicked GIDGETTA for the show. GIDGETTA in range along the inside, saved ground around the turn and got edged for the show. NU PI LAMBDA mid-pack early between rivals, traveled two wide into the stretch, angled out and lacked a rally. AFFIANCED stalked in the two path and failed to produce a bid in the drive. ALL QUALITY unhurried in the early going while steered over to the inside, saved ground into the lane and never responded to urging. EQUAL MEASURE settled off the pace, angled out into the stretch and failed to rally. RESPECT MY CANDOR traveled off the rail, went between foes at the quarter pole and proved no menace. HE BE MOJO RISIN stalked outside a rival, raced four to five wide around the turn and was along for the show. ANATOLIA attended the pace four deep, dueled midway through the turn and into the stretch, lost contact with the winner and also lost the whip in upper stretch and weakened. CHOSEN MOON broke in and brushed rival in the beginning, stumbled early then dropped back, raced wide up the backstretch then angled in on the turn, steered back out into the drive and was never a factor. WILD CAT CANYON vied for the lead from inside, could not keep pace nearing the quarter pole and faded in the drive. A J ROCK away quickest from the gate, sped to the front then vied three deep and between rivals, chased the leaders three wide into the stretch and had little left.

CATHKIN PEAK (IRE) settled off the pace, raced two wide then moved out three wide on the backstretch, went three deep into the far turn, came four wide into the lane, rallied to the front mid-stretch and finished strongly under a drive. DU JOUR broke in and bumped rival, traveled three wide around the first turn, three deep on the backstretch, moved out and was fanned five wide into the lane, rallied but was not enough. AIRMAN settled between rivals, angled four wide into the stretch, angled out past the eighth pole and got up for the show honors. THE GREAT ONE sped to the front and crossed over to the inside, led with company to the outside then inched away leaving the backstretch, led clear to the eighth pole then got overtaken in the furlong grounds and weakened late. MISS BELLA CIAO bumped at the start, traveled near the back of the pack, swung five wide into the lane and summoned a mild rally. GOT CURLY chased three deep then outside a rival on the far turn, ranged up three wide at the quarter pole but flattened out in the late stages. MOUNT PELLIAR tracked the pace from inside, waited for room at the quarter pole, lacked room in upper stretch, angled in late and improved position. DIXIE'S TWO STENTS forwardly placed near the inside, saved ground into the stretch and weakened. DRIVEHAPPY pulled early while between rivals, remained between foes to the quarter pole, came three wide into the stretch, lacked room in upper stretch and weakened. K P AIM HIGH pressed the pace from outside then chased the leader leaving the backstretch, entered the stretch two wide and weakened. SHOTGUN EXPRESS (IRE) saved ground into the lane and was never a factor. SPACE ODESSEY was always outrun.
