Bill Sharman auctioning 2010 Lakers championship ring for charity

Two-time Hall of Famer Bill Sharman is auctioning his 2010 Lakers championship ring, with the proceeds going to charity.

The Bill’s Ring of Hope campaign kicked off Wednesday and will close at 8 a.m. Pacific time on June 7. Tickets cost $2 each with a minimum purchase of five ($10 overall).

Tickets can be purchased at www.billsringofhope.com.

The winner will receive not only Sharman’s ring, representing the Lakers victory in the NBA Finals over the Boston Celtics, but also a pair of tickets to a game (next season), up to $4,000 in travel expenses and $8,146.25 in cash to be paid to the Internal Revenue Service and Commonwealth of Massachusetts (to offset the tax liability).

The fair-market value is estimated to be $18,800.

Hall of Famer James Worthy helped announce the event in a news conference Wednesday at the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo.

“The No. 1 reason to get success is so that you can create a platform for yourself, so that you can give back,” Worthy said.

Sharman was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player with the Celtics and as a coach with the Lakers -- leading the franchise to its 1971-72 title. He also served as the Lakers general manager and team president.

Sharman is aided by Celebrities for Charity Foundation, the same organization that helped Metta World Peace auction off his 2010 ring to raise money for mental-health awareness through NetRaffle.org.

“I think they have an amazing concept,” World Peace said. “They can take somebody’s vision -- somebody that wants to give back and we don’t know how to do it ... they execute everything for us.”

“All we had to do was pick the charities,” he continued.

Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Toberman Neighborhood Center, Lakers Youth Foundation, Public Counsel, Angel’s Nest, James Worthy Foundation, Providence TrinityCare Hospice, West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation and Xcel University.

Toberman Neighborhood Center, a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of services to the Harbor-Area community including mentoring, gang intervention, adult education and legal services (among many others).
