David Beckham says he’s going to retire at end of season

Soccer star and international icon David Beckham will retire at the end of the season May 26.

Beckham, 38, signed a five-month deal with Paris St-Germain in January and donated all of his salary to charity. He won a French league championship with the team, adding to the ones he won in England with Manchester United, in Spain with Real Madrid and in the United States with the Galaxy.

“If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy,” Beckham said in a statement. “I’m fortunate to have realized those dreams.”

With Manchester United, Beckham won six Premier League titles, two F.A. Cups and the 1999 Champions League. In the summer of 2003, he joined Real Madrid in a deal worth $45 million, winning La Liga with them in 2007. He came to the Galaxy later that year and helped win them two MLS Cups before leaving in 2012.

Beckham has two games remaining with Paris St-Germain. The season ends May 26 at Lorient.

“I’m thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue, but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level,” Beckham said in a statement.

Beckham made 115 appearances for England and represented his country in three World Cups (1998, 2002 and 2006).
