Brandon Moore agrees to join Cowboys, then retires instead

For a moment, a night really, the Dallas Cowboys may have thought they had fortified their offensive line when former New York Jets guard Brandon Moore agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million, according to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.

By morning, Moore decided rather than join “America’s Team” for one more season, it was time to call it a career.

“I was wrestling with it all night,” said Moore, 33. “I was excited, but when you start looking at all the personal factors that go into it and the commitment on the football side and you’ve been in a different mental state also the past three or four months because no action’s been happening, you kind of move on with your life.”

The Cowboys will now have to find another option to protect quarterback Tony Romo, whom they signed to a six-year, $108-million contract in the off-season.

Moore, who went undrafted out of Illinois, made one Pro Bowl appearance during his 10 seasons with the Jets, where he started 142 of the 144 games in which he appeared.

There often isn’t much glory for an offensive lineman, but Moore will probably live forever because of the quarterback Mark Sanchez’s collision with his backside on Thanksgiving Day last season, creating the infamous “butt fumble.”
