Matt Flynn heads to Raiders; Carson Palmer headed out

The NFL quarterback carousel took another spin Monday, with Seattle trading backup Matt Flynn to Oakland, as the Raiders prepared to ship Carson Palmer to Arizona.

Oakland traded its fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft to the Seahawks, as well as a conditional pick in 2015.

The move reunites Flynn and Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie, who was director of player personnel in Green Bay when Flynn backed up Aaron Rodgers.

“Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback,” McKenzie said. “He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn’t had enough experience. We’re going to let him compete and battle, and see what happens.”

Flynn, a coveted free agent last spring, became somewhat expendable in Seattle when third-round rookie Russell Wilson won the starting job. Flynn’s departure, however, leaves a vacancy at the backup spot.

The Raiders, meanwhile, are working out a deal to trade the 33-year-old Palmer, who recently refused to take a pay cut on his $13-million salary. Dealing him to the Cardinals presumably would be contingent upon him agreeing to such a cut with the Cardinals.

Over the weekend, former Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb signed a two-year deal with Buffalo. Arizona released him last month after two disappointing, injury-plagued seasons.
