Girls’ basketball: Mater Dei vs. Windward for Open Division title on Friday
It doesn’t get any better in girls’ basketball than Friday’s Southern Section Open Division girls’ final between Santa Ana Mater Dei and Los Angeles Windward at 9 p.m. at Azusa Pacific.
Mater Dei is ranked No. 2 in the nation by USA Today. Windward has the No. 1 point guard in California in Jordin Canada and owns two wins this season over Long Beach Poly.
The winner will get the No. 1 seed for the Southern California Regionals. The two schools could end up having a rematch in the regional final on March 22 in Ontario.
Mater Dei is 26-1. Windward is 23-2. Mater Dei likes to press. Windward has the ultimate press breaker in Canada, plus a powerful inside scoring threat in Kristen Simon.
It has all the potential to be a girls’ basketball classic.
