Questions remain as Dodgers break camp
PEORIA, Ariz. -- While Clayton Kershaw and a group of D-listers faced the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, most of the Dodgers were already on their way back to Los Angeles.
Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang departed camp without knowing what their futures held. Members of the team’s five-man rotation last year, they figure to be traded or moved to the bullpen.
Ted Lilly, who was scheduled to follow Kershaw on Wednesday, is also out of the rotation. But Manager Don Mattingly said Lilly could start the season on the disabled list.
“He’s not built up,” Mattingly said.
Between now and Sunday, the Dodgers will also have to decide on who will be their fourth outfielder.
With Yasiel Puig optioned to double-A Chattanooga, three players remain in the competition: Alfredo Amezaga, Alex Castellanos and Elian Herrera.
The batting champion of the Mexican winter league, Amezaga was in camp on a minor-league contract. He and Herrera, a career minor leaguer who was briefly a surprise contributor last season, are capable of playing multiple positions.
Castellanos, 26, played in 18 major league games last season. Of the group, he is the only player who is a home run threat.
