Dodgers beat big league-best Rays with timely offense and clutch relief pitching

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — All season, the Dodgers’ offense has been inconsistent yet productive, streaky but successful.

“If you look at where guys are at,” manager Dave Roberts said Saturday, “some guys have been ice cold and then they run really hot.”

That was the case again in the Dodgers’ come-from-behind, 6-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, coupling superstar-like performances from Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts with just enough offensive punch from the rest of the team.

Julio Urías likely a couple weeks away from return after feeling hamstring ‘soreness’

Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías throws to first during a game against the San Diego Padres on May 7.
(Alex Gallardo / Associated Press)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Julio Urías won’t be ready to return to action next weekend after all.

After feeling some “soreness” in his hamstring on Friday, according to manager Dave Roberts, the left-hander did not throw a bullpen session as expected Saturday, pushing back his timeline at least a week after initially going on the injured list May 20.

The Dodgers’ new plan for Urías is to have him complete a bullpen session Tuesday, then throw a simulated game several days later. It means his original target return for next weekend against the New York Yankees is off the table, and that rookie Bobby Miller will get a more extended run in the big league rotation after making his MLB debut Tuesday.

Will Dodgers seek starting pitching at deadline? Loss to Rays highlights question

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — What started as a potential preseason concern for the Dodgers has turned into a sudden midseason conundrum.

Less than two months into the schedule, the team’s starting pitching might need to be shored up.

It’s a result of injuries at the major league level, coupled with thinning options on the farm.

And though Major League Baseball’s trade deadline isn’t until the beginning of August, speculation about the team’s need to add more on the mound is already beginning to start.

It’s an issue that was under the microscope in a 9-3 loss to the first-place Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, when Noah Syndergaard gave up six runs in six troublesome innings that raised his earned-run average to 6.27 — eighth highest in the majors among pitchers with at least 40 innings.
