Final: Dodgers survive scare in the ninth, hold on for 3-0 win
Craig Kimbrel got in trouble again, loading the bases with one out in the ninth inning after being summoned for the save.
However, he got out of it to finish off the Dodgers 3-0 win, giving them their sixth win in seven games on this road trip.
Miguel Vargas finished his MLB debut 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, a double and a stolen base.
The Dodgers are 71-33 on the season.
Final: Dodgers 3, Giants 0
Evan Phillips escapes bases-loading jam to preserve Julio Urías’ scoreless start
After largely cruising through the first six innings, Julio Urías got knocked out before recording an out in the seventh.
J.D. rolled a leadoff single to left. Then Luis González and Joey Bart recorded back-to-back infield hits — with second baseman Gavin Lux unable to cleanly field a slow ground ball on the first, and shortstop Trea Turner failing to snare a chopper on the second.
Before the next at-bat, Urías was pulled after 96 pitches.
Evan Phillips was summoned to try and escape a late-game jam for the second-straight night.
The right-handed reliever did so. He struck out Dixon Machado on a called third strike. After that, pinch-hitter Mike Yastrzemski hit a pop up to shallow right, where Mookie Betts swooped in for the catch and doubled off González at second base for the third out.
Betts had extended the Dodgers lead in the top half of the inning with a sacrifice fly, as well.
Urías’ final line: 6+ innings, 0 runs, 7 hits, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts. His ERA is 2.57.
End 7th: Dodgers lead 3-0
Miguel Vargas drives in another run while Julio Urías cruises through first four innings
Miguel Vargas added to his stat line in his second at-bat in the top of the fourth, plating Max Muncy from third base with a broken bat ground ball to the left side of the infield.
Dodgers starter Julio Urías, meanwhile, has been cruising so far.
He retired the first 11 batters he faced — five via strikeout — then stranded a two-out double in the fourth.
He entered the fifth inning with just 50 pitches.
End 4th: Dodgers lead 2-0
Miguel Vargas gives Dodgers the lead with ground-rule double in first career at-bat
For the second time this road trip, a debuting Dodgers hitter delivered in his first career at-bat.
After James Outman hit a home run in his debut last week, Miguel Vargas produced an RBI ground-rule double in his first trip to the plate in the majors.
Vargas had been behind in the count to Alex Cobb 0-and-2 before laying off a couple splitters, then clobbering a 106.1 mph line drive that bounced over the wall in right-center.
He stole third base on the very next pitch, but was left stranded there.
End 2nd: Dodgers lead 1-0
Dodgers, Giants honor Vin Scully with moment of silence pregame
Prior to first pitch tonight, both teams lined up on the field to honor Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, who died on Tuesday.
After a scoreboard video commemoration, there was a moment of silence.
The Dodgers tonight are also wearing “Vin” patches on the sleeves of their jerseys.
Dodgers prospect Miguel Vargas to make MLB debut
A day after being called up for the first time, Miguel Vargas will make his MLB debut on Wednesday night in San Francisco, serving as the Dodgers’ designated hitter as they try to clinch a series win against the Giants.
“I’m super excited,” Vargas said in Spanish. “It’s not only my dream, but the dream of my entire family and everyone that I’ve surrounded myself with. I’m very excited about tonight.”
A 22-year-old right-handed hitter who was a consensus top-100 prospect in the sport entering the year, Vargas was batting .291 with a .880 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in 94 games at triple A this year.
Here’s the Dodgers full lineup, with Julio Urías on the mound against Alex Cobb:
Vin Scully, forever the voice of the Dodgers, dies at 94
The way Vin Scully called a baseball game, it felt like bumping into an old friend. There were stories to tell and memories to share, his soothing banter as familiar as green grass and warm breezes on a sunny afternoon.
Generations of Southern California fans knew this, listening for hours on end, at home and in their cars, pressing transistor radios to their ears even as they sat watching at the ballpark.
“Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good afternoon to you wherever you may be,” Scully would invariably begin. “Pull up a chair and spend part of the day with us.”
The renowned Dodgers broadcaster died Tuesday, the team announced. He was 94. The Dodgers said he died at his home in Hidden Hills.
ICYMI: Dodgers pull away late in 9-5 win over Giants
On the day of both MLB’s trade deadline, and the death of legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, the Dodgers’ actual game took a back seat on Tuesday.
However, the team won nonetheless, pulling away from the Giants late in a 9-5 victory.
The Dodgers are 70-33.
