Final: Dodgers take series with 3-2 extra-inning win over Marlins

MIAMI — It took two pitchers to get through the bottom of the 10th, but the Dodgers held Monday night for a 3-2 extra-inning win that gave them a four-game series-victory in Miami.

After the Dodgers took the lead in the top of the 10th on a Trea Turner infield single (his 1,000th career hit) and Freddie Freeman RBI fielder’s choice, closer Craig Kimbrel was asked to return to the mound for only his second multi-inning outing of the year.

It didn’t go well.

Though he pitched a clean ninth inning to send the game to extras, Kimbrel got into a mess in the 10th.

He walked his first batter, Jon Berti.

He went to a full count against Brian Anderson, before inducing a potential double-play grounder that netted only one out after Chris Taylor made a bad throw from second.

Then Kimbrel issued a second free pass to JJ Bleday, missing the zone badly with a full-count fastball to load the bases.

Having thrown 32 pitches, manager Dave Roberts didn’t let Kimbrel go any further. He summoned right-hander Chris Martin from the bullpen — a reliever he had been trying to stay away from after he’d pitched the previous night.

Alas, Martin came in and extinguished the threat, striking out Garrett Cooper on three pitches before shaking off an apparent missed check swing call to induce a game-ending pop-up from Jacob Stallings.

“It was an emergency situation and he said he felt good enough to pitch,” Roberts said of Martin, who is now eighth Dodgers pitcher to record a save this year. “He came in and did a great job.”

The Dodgers are now 89-38.

Final: Dodgers 3, Marlins 2

Game heading to extras tied at 2-2

After the early offense, both teams failed to score over the final five regulation innings, meaning we will head to extras in the series finale with the score still tied at 2-2.

The Dodgers got scoreless innings of relief from Caleb Ferguson, Evan Phillips, Phil Bickford and Craig Kimbrel.

At the plate, however, they’ve only had a runner in scoring position once since the fourth inning, when Gavin Lux stranded a pair in the top of the ninth by flying out in a pinch-hitting appearance.

End 9th: Tied 2-2

Michael Grove exits in tie game, then David Price escapes jam

Micahel Grove gave the Dodgers 4 2/3 innings in his third MLB start, giving up an RBI single to Lewin Diaz in the fourth before turning over a one-on, two-out spot to David Price in the fifth.

The veteran left-hander almost made a mess of it, allowing the Marlins to load the bases on a double and a walk.

However, Price escaped the jam by getting Jacob Stallings to ground out.

Dodgers fall behind early, before Will Smith hits go-ahead home run

With Michael Grove making a spot start in place of the injured Tony Gonsolin, the rookie right-hander gave up a leadoff double in the first to Joey Wendle that led to a Marlins run.

Two innings later, however, the Dodgers got it back and more, thanks to a two-run home run by Will Smith.

Earlier Monday, Smith had been named as an addition to next spring’s Team USA roster for the World Baseball Classic — where the final rounds will just so happen to be held back here in Miami.

For now, he collected his 19th home run and 75th RBI of the season.

Mid 3rd: Dodgers lead 2-1

MIAMI — The Dodgers pitching staff has taken another hit.

On Monday, the team placed Tony Gonsolin on the injured list with a right forearm strain, preventing the All-Star right-hander from making a scheduled start Monday night against the Miami Marlins.

Right-hander Michael Grove was recalled to start the game.

According to a person with knowledge of the situation who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly, Gonsolin’s injury isn’t believed to be serious, and the team expects him to be able to return to action this season.

Mookie Betts has been on an MVP-caliber tear for Dodgers in Marlins series

MIAMI — Mookie Betts’ peaks are so high, even relatively productive stretches at the plate can seem quiet.

That’s where the All-Star right fielder was entering the Dodgers’ weekend series in Miami. He’d been playing well in his return from a foot injury earlier this year, with a .283 batting average and an .859 on-base-plus-slugging percentage since the start of July. But he wasn’t on fire either, not all the way.

That’s changed over the last three games against the Marlins.

On Friday, Betts homered twice and then hit a game-winning double in the 10th inning. On Saturday, he went deep again for his 30th home run of the season.
