Dodgers put Howie Kendrick on disabled list, call up Jose Peraza

The Dodgers put second baseman Howie Kendrick on the disabled list Monday and called up Jose Peraza to replace him.

Peraza, 21, is in Monday’s starting lineup at second base. The Dodgers said he would be the youngest player to make his debut with the team since Clayton Kershaw, who was 20, and the youngest position player to do so since Adrian Beltre, who was 19.

Peraza, acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the Dodgers’ three-team, 13-player trade on July 30, batted .385 in 10 games at triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers also put Carlos Frias on the disabled list because of lower back tightness, thus voiding his option to the minor leagues. The move is retroactive to Aug. 2, so Frias would be eligible to return next week. If he is healthy, he is among the options for the leaky Dodgers bullpen.

This is the fourth time in his career that Kendrick has been on the disabled list because of a strained hamstring, the first time since 2011. In the three previous DL stints, he sat out six and a half weeks, three and a half weeks, and the minimum 15 days, respectively.

Kendrick, 32, can file for free agency after the season. He has played in 105 of the Dodgers’ first 111 games, batting .296 with nine home runs. Kendrick’s .759 OPS ranks third among National League second basemen.
