The Dodgers traded three prospects for three prospects as part of a three-team trade Wednesday.

The Dodgers acquired right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas, second baseman Micah Johnson and outfielder Trayce Thompson from the Chicago White Sox for second baseman Jose Peraza, outfielder Scott Schebler and infielder Brandon Dixon.

The White Sox sent those three players to the Cincinnati Reds for the best player in the trade, All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier. The Dodgers did not pursue trading their prospects directly to the Reds for Frazier because they would have had to move Justin Turner from third base to second base, a position they feared might not work for Turner and his surgically repaired knee.

The Dodgers could have a prospect-laden triple-A rotation of Montas, Julio Urias, Jose DeLeon and Jharel Cotton, or they could trade from that group and elsewhere in their deep farm system to acquire a young starting pitcher who could help the Dodgers in 2016 and beyond, perhaps Carlos Carrasco of the Cleveland Indians or Jose Fernandez of the Miami Marlins. The Dodgers previously walked away from talks for Fernandez when the Marlins reportedly asked for a package that started with Urias, shortstop Corey Seager and outfielder Joc Pederson.

For now, at least, the Dodgers believe all three prospects acquired Wednesday could help in Los Angeles at some point next season.

Montas, 22, who flashed a 100-mph fastball in last summer’s Futures Game, could emerge as a starter or power reliever. Johnson, 24, a career .301 minor league batter, could offer the Dodgers a left-handed platoon mate with Enrique Hernandez at second base.

Thompson, 24, who made his major league debut last season, could provide depth in center field, an area that could be critical if Hernandez is used at second base. Thompson is the son of former Lakers star Mychal Thompson and the brother of Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson.

In July, the Dodgers got pitchers Alex Wood, Luis Avilan, Mat Latos, Jim Johnson and Bronson Arroyo and infielders Peraza and Mike Morse in a three-team, 13-player trade. Five months later, only Wood and Avilan remain.
