Dodgers are giving the Brandon Beachy effort a second try

I don’t know if love is really lovelier the second time around, but the Dodgers are hoping that a low-risk signing works out that way.

Just as they did a year ago, the Dodgers have signed right-hander – hey, one of those! – Brandon Beachy to non-guaranteed $1.5-million contract Wednesday that includes significant incentives.

The Dodgers went this route last season, taking a minimal gamble on the previous rising star in the Braves organization. That was before he had two Tommy John surgeries in three years.

If it did not got exactly as planned last season – he ended up making two starts (0-1, 7.88 ERA) – the Dodgers have decided to go the low-risk route with him a second time. In parts of four seasons with the Braves, Beachy went 14-11 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 46 starts.

To make room for Beachy, 29, on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated left-hander Tyler Olson for assignment.

Olson becomes another of the front office’s temporary winter additions, having just been picked up three weeks ago from the Mariners. Olson had replaced right-hander Danny Reynolds, whom they’d just picked up 11 days earlier from the Angels.

When the Kenta Maeda signing becomes official, they will have to make yet another 40-man move.
