La Cañada’s Fiesta Days postponed, masks mandated as coronavirus count climbs to 23
As the number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in La Cañada Flintridge on Wednesday climbed to 23 individuals — alongside 11 cases identified in unincorporated La Crescenta/Montrose — county officials began requiring all residents to wear face coverings while conducting essential business.
“Starting tomorrow, it’s mandatory to wear a face covering when you leave home to go to an essential business, including when you’re grocery shopping or going to a medical appointment,” L.A. County 5th District Supervisor Kathryn Barger shared Tuesday on Facebook.
Signs went up in businesses all over town, indicating customers would not be allowed in without a mask or face covering. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies are authorized to warn offenders and issue citations when necessary.
Although the city of Glendale in a meeting Tuesday extended its own requirement to include any trips outside citizens’ private property, such as neighborhood walks, the county mandate so far only applies to interaction with other individuals in public places.
Another toll of the pandemic came Wednesday morning, when the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced the city’s 47th annual Memorial Weekend Fiesta Days would not be held on Memorial Day weekend.
“Fiesta Days and all events will be moved from the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend (Sept. 4 through 7, 2020) pending clearance regarding COVID-19 restrictions,” Chamber President and Chief Executive Pat Anderson said in an email. “Please continue to check the chamber’s website for updates.”
The three-day citywide Fiesta Days celebration includes a parade, Memorial Day service and a slate of community-sponsored events, including a fireworks show, a 10K/5K race and an outdoor movie.
