La Cañada coronavirus cases hold at 16, while La Crescenta/Montrose count jumps to 10
While the number of novel coronavirus cases in the La Cañada reporting area Wednesday was 16 — the same as it was on Tuesday — county health officials reported four more cases in unincorporated La Crescenta/Montrose, bringing that total to 10.
News came as the number of infections throughout Los Angeles County reached 7,530 with 198 deaths recorded as of noon Wednesday.
Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer urged residents in a press briefing Monday to hunker down at home, avoid shopping trips and wear face masks or coverings while in public.
“If you have enough supplies in your home, this would be the week to skip shopping altogether,” Ferrer said.
But despite Ferrer’s warning to shelter in place during the anticipated surge, lines at La Cañada grocery stores Tuesday morning wrapped around the block as residents waited for their turn to stock up on necessities and food items.
Trader Joe’s admitted customers in small quantities to prevent overcrowding, instructing patrons to maintain a 6-foot distance in a line that extended down Gould Avenue to Foothill Boulevard. Shoppers at Ralphs grocery store in Montrose suited up in masks and gloves.
On Tuesday, La Cañada’s 16 cases (twice the number reported the previous week) put the calculated rate per 100,000 citizens at 78, placing it ahead of Glendale’s 76 per 100,000. However, 12 new cases identified in Glendale Wednesday brought that city’s total to 166, or roughly 80 per 100,000.
The new cases in La Crescenta/Montrose, combined in a single reporting area, bring that community’s calculated rate to nearly 51 per 100,000 people.
