Learning Matters: Final column ends years of writing about education, things dear to her

I had no idea, when former Glendale News-Press editor Dan Evans asked me nearly seven years ago if I’d be interested in writing a biweekly column, what the relationship of columnist-to-reader or columnist-to-editor would come to mean to me.

On Thursday, after the call from my editor Mark Kellam to let me know that this weekend’s edition would be the last for the paper, I’m buffeted by the loss.

For me, as for my columnist colleague Brian Crosby, it’s not a layoff. We each agreed years ago to write without pay, grateful as we were to have the space to connect the community to the work of education.

I can only imagine how the news is hitting the paper’s paid journalists, some of whom have covered our city for years.

I hope somehow we’ll keep the news and reflections of Glendale coming. You have my email, [email protected]. Please keep in touch, and keep well.

Thank you, dear readers.
