Glendale closes senior centers, public pool as a coronavirus precaution
Glendale’s senior centers and public pool are shutting down through the end of March, as the city grapples with the best way to address concerns about the novel coronavirus.
Local officials have also canceled all city-sponsored events, as well as private events planned at city facilities with more than 50 participants, for the month. The city’s adult softball and baseball teams are suspended as well.
The city announced the closures and cancellations on late Thursday afternoon, following on the heels of a statewide recommendation to call off large gatherings of more than 250 people and practice social distancing.
“The present situation with COVID-19 is unprecedented, and the decision to cancel events and close facilities is consistent with what is emerging as ‘best practice’ and the state’s directives,” according to a city statement.
“Glendale’s strategy is to limit the opportunity for people to come into contact with one another so as to limit the extent to which the COVID-19 virus can spread,” the statement said.
Glendale has no confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Pasadena reported its first Wednesday. There were roughly 40 confirmed cases in Los Angeles County and just under 200 in the state, according to reports on Friday.
Seniors will still be able to receive meals through the city’s elderly nutrition plan, but they must be taken to-go.
As of March 12, Glendale’s spring camps will continue as scheduled. However, officials noted that may change.
