Writer commits to Missouri Valley College

Laguna Beach girls’ basketball player Emily Writer committed to play on scholarship next year at Missouri Valley College, Laguna Coach Jon Hendrickson said.

Writer scored 408 points and averaged 19.4 points per game during the 2010-11 season. The senior shattered the program’s all-time scoring record at Laguna Beach with 1,551 in 86 games. She was first-team all-Orange Coast League and was second in voting for league MVP, Hendrickson said.

“Emily is one of, if not the most, competitive player I have ever coached in my nine years,” Hendrickson said. “She deserves the accolades and to get a basketball scholarship from a small town like Laguna tells you everything you need to know about her reputation.

“I couldn’t be more proud of her and am excited to see how her career unfolds at the next level.”

Missouri Valley College, a private four-year liberal arts school located in Marshall, Mo., is an NAIA division school and a member of the Heart of America Conference.

Laguna teams riding high in CIF polls

Three Laguna Beach spring sports teams — boys’ volleyball, baseball and boys’ tennis — are ranked in this week’s CIF Southern Section polls.

The boys’ volleyball team is ranked second behind Corona del Mar in the Division 2 poll.

Laguna’s baseball team again is ranked fourth in the Division 4 behind Bishop Amat, Palm Desert and Torrance, which last week was ranked fifth and traded spots with the team ranked third the last two weeks, Oaks Christian.

The Division 4 boys’ tennis rankings remained status quo, with Laguna residing at No. 3. Viewpoint and Paramount continued their runs at one and two.

Lawn bowling event is Saturday

The Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club will hold an open house event, “Saturday On The Green,” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the club (455 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach). The open house includes free lessons, games, food and other activities.
