High School Roundup: Pacifica Christian girls’ volleyball falls to Wiseburn Da Vinci in semifinals

Katana Santiago had a match-high 18 kills, as visiting El Segundo Wiseburn Da Vinci defeated Pacifica Christian Orange County 25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23 on Saturday in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 8 girls’ volleyball playoffs.

The No. 2-seed Wolves (25-5) will play host to top-seeded Santa Clarita Christian (31-0) in the section final on Nov. 6.

Isabella Taueetia pounded out 12 kills, and Ilaise Tu’akoi chipped in with five kills, six service aces and 1½ blocks for Wiseburn Da Vinci.

“We needed to want it, and the way we play very much depends on our energy and how loud we cheer, how much we scream on the court, and so we needed to want it,” Santiago said. “I’m one of the loudest players on this team, so I have to be really loud to encourage all the other people to yell.”

Rebecca Penjoyan provided a team-high 14 kills to go with two aces and two blocks for the No. 3-seeded Tritons (19-10). Logan Bray contributed 28 assists and three aces, Julia Hanson had seven kills, and Kaelin Rieke added four kills and 2½ blocks.

“That was such a great fight,” Penjoyan said. “I think that was the best we’ve played all season, and honestly, I’m just really proud of our team and the way we played and [of] our mentality through the entire game.”

Pacifica Christian coach Ally Forsberg echoed Penjoyan’s sentiments in watching the Tritons elevate their performance to meet the moment.

“I think each match we played, we just got better and better, and it showed in that game,” Forsberg said. “From the beginning of the season to the end of the season, we were just blocking so many more balls, touching more balls, and I thought all of our hard work in the beginning of the season really paid off tonight.”

Huntington Beach 3, Palos Verdes 0: Lillian Perkins paced the Oilers with 13 kills in a 25-22, 25-14, 25-22 road sweep in the Division 2 semifinals on Saturday.

Huntington Beach (28-5), the No. 3 seed in the bracket, will be at home against top-seeded Aliso Niguel (25-4) in the championship match. Huntington Beach, which has won 21 matches in a row, will be playing in its first CIF final since 2009.

The Wolverines defeated Pasadena La Salle 21-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12 in the other semifinal.

FOOTBALL

Laguna Beach 49, Godinez 0: Will Bingham threw for 396 yards and six touchdowns for the host Breakers on Friday in a Pac 4 League game.

Laguna Beach (9-1, 3-0) clinched the outright league title with the victory.

Luke Degner made his four catches count, as he wound up with 195 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 51-yard punt return.

Ryner Swanson also had four catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Myles Freeman had the other receiving score.

Corona del Mar 49, Fountain Valley 7: David Rasor and Kaleb Annett recorded two touchdown passes apiece, as the Sea Kings routed the Barons in a Sunset League game at Davidson Field on Friday.

Evan Sanders ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Max Lane also had a rushing touchdown.

John Tipton reeled in two receiving touchdowns for CdM (8-2, 3-2). Cooper Hoch and Scott Truninger each caught one touchdown.

Fountain Valley fell to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in league.

Edison 41, Huntington Beach 6: Troy Fletcher scored twice on the ground in the first half to lead the Chargers to a blowout win over the Oilers in a Sunset League game at Huntington Beach High School.

Parker Awad threw for two touchdowns – to Tyler Hampton and Ty Bandaruk. Tyler Gioia also found Dominic Lopez for another touchdown through the air for Edison (7-3, 4-1).

Peyton Gregory provided an interception return for a touchdown for the Chargers defensively.

Huntington Beach dropped to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in league.

Los Alamitos 48, Newport Harbor 6: Los Alamitos (9-1, 5-0) clinched the outright Sunset League title with Friday’s victory.

Newport Harbor, which suffered its second straight defeat, finished the regular season at 3-7 overall and 2-3 in league.
