College Roundup: UC Irvine women’s basketball closes out regular season with win at Cal State Fullerton
Sophia Locandro had 16 points and eight rebounds as the UC Irvine women’s basketball team beat Cal State Fullerton 68-52 Saturday in a Big West Conference finale on the road.
Haleigh Talbert added 15 points for UC Irvine (13-17, 9-7 in conference), which won its fifth straight game. The Anteaters finished tied for second in conference.
The Big West Conference tournament begins Tuesday.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
NAIA National Indoor Championships
Vanguard’s Amanda Chan finished second in the high jump Saturday at South Dakota State, with her mark of 1.74 meters (5 feet, 8 1/2 inches) setting a new school record.
Michaela Schaeffer finished seventh in the triple jump with a top leap of 11.81 meters (38 feet, nine inches).
WRESTLING
NAIA National Championships
Vanguard’s Armon Fayyazi finished eighth at 174 pounds Saturday in Park City, Kansas. He became the Lions’ first All-American in 45 years.
BASEBALL
Golden West 12, Orange Coast 8: Noah Amenta was two for four with a triple and four runs batted in for the Rustlers in Saturday’s Orange Empire Conference game at Golden West.
Vinny Tosti had three hits for Golden West (10-10, 2-1 in conference).
David Morgan was three for five with two runs scored for Orange Coast (10-8, 1-2).
Vanguard 9, San Diego Christian 4: Chad Sutton was three for five with a grand slam for the Lions in the first game of Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at home.
Landon Riker had two hits and two runs batted in for Vanguard (21-6, 9-3 in conference).
Vanguard 11, San Diego Christian 1 (seven innings): DJ Sutorious allowed one run in four innings as the Lions earned the doubleheader sweep Saturday.
Aki Buckson was three for four with three runs scored.
SOFTBALL
Ottawa (Ariz.) 2, Vanguard 0: The Lions were blanked in the first game of Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at home.
Vanessa Dwyer pitched for Vanguard (19-7, 3-3 in conference).
Vanguard 3, Ottawa (Ariz.) 1: Cassie Balswick had a run-scoring single scoring Johanna Lewis for the Lions as they salvaged the doubleheader split Saturday.
Hannah Corrado had a pair of hits for the Lions.
Southwestern 8, Golden West 0: The Rustlers fell to 8-11 after Saturday’s nonconference game at home.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pacific Coast Doubles Championship
UC Irvine freshman Ali Amiri and sophomore Antoine Barthe fell in the round of 16 on Saturday at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
Amiri and Barthe lost 6-3, 6-4 to Ignacio Martinez and Rafael Gonzalez Almazan of San Diego State.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
UC Irvine 14, UC Davis 8: Toni Shackelford scored a career-high six goals for the Anteaters in Saturday’s Big West Conference opener on the road.
UC Irvine improved to 14-5 overall.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC Irvine 3, Grand Canyon 2: Akhil Tangutur finished with 16 kills as the Anteaters earned a 20-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-9 nonconference road win Saturday.
Joel Schneidmiller had 15 kills for UC Irvine (10-7).
Benedictine University (Ariz.) 3, Vanguard 1: Kyle Anema had 16 kills for the Lions in Saturday’s 17-25, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25 Golden State Athletic Conference loss on the road.
Dylan Garcia added 10 kills for No. 8 Vanguard (10-7, 6-3 in conference).
