High School Roundup: Laguna, Newport, Marina girls’ water polo teams reach CIF SoCal Regional semifinals

Nicole Struss and Imani Clemons each scored three goals for the top-seeded Laguna Beach High girls’ water polo team in a 19-3 win over No. 8 La Jolla in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division I playoffs Friday at Segerstrom High.

Ella Baumgardner, Jessie Rose, Emma Lineback, Molly Renner and Charlotte Riches each scored twice for Laguna Beach (31-1).

The Breakers will play No. 5 Newport Harbor in the semifinals Saturday at 1:40 p.m. at Segerstrom. The Sailors got past No. 4 Carlsbad 10-7 in another first-round match.

The final is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Segerstrom.

Marina 11, Eagle Rock 5: Lana Kardos scored five goals for the No. 3-seeded Vikings in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division III playoffs Friday at Ocean View High.

Emma Marsh made 19 saves for the Vikings (22-11).

Marina will play No. 2 Imperial Beach Mar Vista in the semifinals Saturday at 10:10 a.m. at Segerstrom High. The final is at 4 p.m.

BASEBALL

Laguna Beach 14, Placentia Valencia 6: Charlie Pillsbury was two for four with a triple, three runs scored and three runs batted in as the visiting Breakers won the Newport Elks Tournament Costa Mesa Division title game on Friday.

Nolan Smith and Aidan Booth each had two hits for Laguna Beach (7-0), with Booth adding a double.

Nick Bonn earned the win in relief, pitching three scoreless innings for the Breakers.

Corona del Mar 10, Tustin 6: Kieran Sidebotham had three hits for the host Sea Kings in their final Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division game Friday.

Max Lane and Charlie Mannon each hit home runs for CdM (5-2).

Sage Hill 5, Wilmington Harbor Teacher Prep 3: Senior pitcher William Ho earned the win for the Lightning, striking out seven in five innings Friday in the season opener at home.

Arwin Chona had two RBIs for Sage Hill, and Rowan Schneider earned the save.

Newport Harbor 5, Fullerton 1: Clay Liolios hit a two-run home run for the Sailors in Friday’s Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division game at home.

Chase Greer and Jacob Foti each had doubles for Newport Harbor (2-4-1).

Costa Mesa 15, Western 5: Luis Munoz was three for five with a triple and three RBIs for the Mustangs in Friday’s Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Division game on the road.

Kyle Anderson was two for four with a double and four RBIs for Costa Mesa (2-3).

Los Amigos 5, Bell Gardens 4: The Lobos (2-5) won their second straight home game in the Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Division on Friday.

Portola 7, Estancia 2: The host Eagles dropped to 3-3 following Friday’s Orange County Division game of the Newport Elks Tournament.

WRESTLING

CIF State championships: Six of the seven locals that qualified for the tournament did not survive the second day on Friday at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Fountain Valley junior 160-pounder Max Wilner will face Caruthers’ Jake Prudek in the blood round to begin Saturday’s action. A win would guarantee Wilner his second state medal in as many seasons.

Wilner dropped his quarterfinal match against Windsor’s Trent Silva by pin in the second period.

Fountain Valley’s Sean Solis (2-2 at 113 pounds), TJ McDonnell (3-2 at 138 pounds), Luis Ramirez (1-2 at 145 pounds) and Matthew Fee (2-2 at 220 pounds) did not advance.

Corona del Mar’s Emilio Franco (2-2 at 220 pounds) and Estancia’s Jacob Potts (0-2 at 195 pounds) were also eliminated.

GIRLS’ WRESTLING

CIF State championships: Edison 106-pounder Angela De La Cruz will face a blood-round match against Liv Villanueva of Walnut Creek Northgate to start on Saturday in the tournament at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

De La Cruz was pinned in the second period by Calexico’s Karen Salais in their quarterfinal bout on Friday.

Marina’s Kaelani Shufeldt (1-2 at 101 pounds), Huntington Beach’s Alexandra Lopez (0-2 at 131 pounds) and Chloe Palacios (1-2 at 143 pounds), and Costa Mesa’s Breanne Raya (1-2 at 189 pounds) have been eliminated.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Edison 14, Bellflower St. John Bosco 10: Lorenzo Perdomo had five goals to lead the Chargers at home Friday.

Edison improved to 3-1.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Orange County Christian 0: Jackson Baugh had a team-high seven kills to lead the Tritons to a 25-11, 25-14, 25-19 win on Friday in a nonleague match.

Buzz Hodson had six service aces, and Bennett Penticuff had a 2.00 passing average for Pacifica Christian (2-0).
