High School Roundup: Fountain Valley boys’ basketball earns first CIF playoff win since 2011

Preston Amarillo had 23 points and seven assists, and the No. 3-seeded Fountain Valley High boys’ basketball team beat Westminster 75-59 on Wednesday night at home in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs.

Jeremiah Davis scored 16 points for the Barons (17-8), who earned their first playoff victory since the 2010-11 season. Roddie Anderson scored 11 points for Fountain Valley, and Aden Casarez had nine points.

Fountain Valley hosts Temple City in the second round on Friday. Temple City defeated Oxnard Santa Clara 77-62 in another first-round game.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 76, El Toro 47: Houston Mallette scored 16 points for the Tritons in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2A playoffs Wednesday at home.

Riyaan Jiwani and Judah Brown each scored 15 points for Pacifica Christian (21-7), and Charles Erving had 14 points.

The Tritons play at Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in the second round Friday. Mira Costa beat San Clemente 49-42 in the first round.

Los Amigos 58, Calvary Chapel 50: Ata Khalil and Brian Pacheco each scored 14 points as the Lobos won at home Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5A playoffs.

Marco Vasquez added 10 points for Garden Grove League champion Los Amigos (19-8), which plays at Acton Vasquez in the second round on Friday. Vasquez beat Eastside Christian 70-29 in the first round.

Sage Hill 68, Artesia 56: The Lightning won at home Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs.

Sage Hill (12-16) hosts No. 2-seeded Hesperia Oak Hills in the second round Friday. Oak Hills beat San Bernardino 67-37 in another first-round game.

Brethren Christian 55, Bethel Baptist 36: The No. 3-seeded Warriors earned a home win Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5A playoffs.

Brethren Christian (19-5) plays at Fillmore in the second round on Friday. Fillmore got past Pasadena Sequoyah 60-46 in the first round.

Eastvale Roosevelt 56, Newport Harbor 44: Ryan Miller scored 19 points for the Sailors in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs Wednesday at home.

Levi Darrow added 10 points for Newport Harbor, the Surf League co-champion which finished the season 22-7.

Fairmont Prep 74, Edison 58: The Chargers’ season ended in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs Wednesday on the road.

Edison, the Surf League co-champion, finished with a 17-12 record.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach 0, Fullerton 0: The Oilers won a penalty-kick shootout 4-1 on Wednesday in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff opener at home.

Will Macy, Brandon Francis, Cesar Cerda and Slater Hammer scored in the shootout for Huntington Beach (9-7-6).

Daniel Kotkosky (six saves) stopped one penalty kick, and another one was missed by the Indians.

Huntington Beach travels to face No. 3-seeded Goleta Dos Pueblos (13-6-3) in the second round on Friday.

Newport Harbor 1, Santiago 0: Yamil Razo scored for the visiting Sailors on Wednesday in a first-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Joshua Flores kept the clean sheet for Newport Harbor (11-6-1), which will host La Habra in a second-round match on Friday.

Mission Viejo 2, Edison 1: Luke Slavik scored a goal for the host Chargers in Wednesday’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round match.

Edison (15-6-1) was the Surf League champion this season.

Servite 2, Corona del Mar 0: Eduardo Villeda and Jesus Melgoza each had a goal for the host Friars on Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Corona del Mar (11-8) was the second-place team from the Surf League.

North Torrance 4, Los Amigos 1: The Lobos surrendered three goals in the first half on Wednesday in a CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoff opener on the road.

Los Amigos (9-4-5) was the third-place team in the Garden Grove League.

La Habra 4, Estancia 0: The visiting Eagles were shut out on Wednesday in their CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff opener.

Estancia (5-12-7) finished third in the Orange Coast League.
