Couple held in ’94 killing

Authorities have arrested a former NFL player and a woman who prosecutors said plotted to kill a Newport Beach father and businessman in 1994 for access to his beachfront home and $1-million life-insurance policy.

Andrew Naposki, 42, was arrested outside his home in Greenwich, Conn., and Packard McNeal, 43, of Ladera Ranch, was arrested on suspicion of murder for financial gain in connection with the fatal shooting of Bill McLaughlin inside his Newport Beach home.

New evidence prompted authorities to re-open the cold murder case, officials said.

According to prosecutors, McNeal lured McLaughlin into her web of deceit in 1990 or 1991 with a personal ad saying, “I know how to take care of my man if he knows how to take care of me.”

After the two met, McLaughlin, a successful business man, began dating and financially supporting the divorcee, prosecutors said.

What McLaughlin didn’t know, authorities said, is that McNeal allegedly had a boyfriend, a bouncer for a club about 500 feet away. He was Naposki, a former New England Patriot and Indianapolis Colt, prosecutors said.

Authorities said McNeal persuaded Naposki to sneak into McLaughlin’s home and shoot him.

She had taken out a $1-million life-insurance policy on McLaughlin and was guaranteed $150,000 if he died and one year rent-free in his house, officials said.
