BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sage Hill def. Fillmore

FILLMORE — Senior outside hitter Bayle Smith had 24 kills to lift the Lightning to a 25-18, 25-13, 19-25, 25-13 win in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs Tuesday night.

Smith recorded six kills in the fourth set. Senior opposite Alex Lowe added seven kills, while freshman middle blocker Cole Kirby contributed five aces and three kills for Sage Hill (18-12).

The Lightning will play host to Chadwick of Palos Verdes Friday in the quarterfinals in match scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Sage Hill was without Harlan Webster Tuesday night. Lightning Coach Dan Thomassen said there is a 50% chance Webster will play Friday.

Chadwick defeated Loma Linda Academy, 18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-18, 15-13, to advance to the quarterfinals.

CALABASAS — Andrew Yun and Sean Batten swept in No. 2 doubles play, helping the No. 4-seeded Lightning in the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs Tuesday advance to the semifinals for the for the first time in school history.

“We have had better and deeper teams, but never a team with this draw and this never say die attitude,” said Coach A.G. Longoria, who had guided Sage Hill to its seventh straight quarterfinal appearance.

Andrew Kurzweil and Alex Manolakas swept in No. 3 doubles action for Sage Hill (15-7), which will play top-seeded Cerritos in the semifinals Tuesday.

Troy Astorino won two of three sets at No. 2 singles.

Singles – Koeberle (SH) def. Jaffe, lost to Rayman, 3-6, lost to Beisswanger, 1-6; Astorino (SH) won 6-3, lost 2-6, won 6-3; Wang (SH) lost 4-6, won 6-4, lost 6-7.

Doubles – Berchtold-Whitaker (SH) lost to Masseth-Unger, 3-6, (sub) Marshack-Berchtold (SH) lost to Niesner-Yamani, 1-6, (sub) Apramian-Berchtold (SH) lost to Dhadwal-Willner, 5-7; Yun-Batten (SH) won 6-0, 6-1, 7-5; Kurzweil-Manolakas (SH) won 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Corona del Mar 6

CORONA DEL MAR – The No. 2-seeded visitors ended the Sea Kings’ season in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Tuesday.

The visitors’ highly ranked singles lineup, led by Washington-bound Kyle McMorrow and Stanford-bound Denis Lin, proved to be too much for the Sea Kings.

Shane Korber and Peirce Stemler swept at No. 1 doubles for CdM (16-5).

CdM’s Chris Damion and Alex Murray won two out of three sets at No. 2 doubles.

On Friday, Ryan Peyton, Damion and Parker Rhodes play in the CIF individual tournament at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

SOFTBALL

Pasadena Poly 6, Estancia 5

PASADENA — The Eagles had 15 hits, but the Panthers scored one run in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs to win the CIF Southern Section Division V wild-card game Tuesday.

Nicole Marlborough went four for five with a double, Amy Hartwell went three for five with two runs and Kassie Stratton went three for five with one run for Estancia (14-10).

Cheyanne Flores pitched a complete game for the Eagles, striking out four and walking two.

Poly improved to 12-13.
