MOORPARK — Newport Harbor High junior Cecil Whiteside qualified second in the discus (174 feet, 10 inches) Saturday at Moorpark High to move on to next week’s finals.

Whiteside also qualified seventh in the shot put (53-10). Sailors junior Jake Taylor qualified eighth in the shot put (53-7).

In the pole vault, Mark Sakioka and Max Van Bergh both cleared 13-9 to move on to the finals. The top 11 in the pole vault advanced rather than the traditional nine, since there were problems with the pit that did not allow the competition to finish.

The CIF Championships take place May 23 at Cerritos College.

CIF Division IV

preliminaries

CARPINTERIA — Sage Hill School’s Colton Gyulay qualified for next week’s finals in two individual events and a relay at Carpinteria High Saturday.

Gyulay qualified fifth in the long jump (20 feet, 11 inches) and eighth in the triple jump (42-1).

He was third leg in the 4x100 team that qualified fourth in 44.32. Andy Multari, Jack Percival and Kevin Schaefer were also on the relay team.

Schaefer qualified fourth in the 100 in 11.08.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

CIF Division II

preliminaries

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor High’s Melissa Hancock qualified first in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 6 inches, a personal record, Saturday at Moorpark High.

Erica Pearson also qualified for next week’s finals in the 3,200 meters and will be seeded seventh. She finished in 11 minutes, 2.51 seconds.

Sophomores Allison Krugman and Ciara Sabbri qualified seventh and eighth, respectively, in the pole vault after both cleared 10-0.

Lillie Berry qualified ninth in the 400 in 58.58.

Newport Harbor’s 1,600 relay team of Shannon Magner, Mary Yeager, Shanay Fischer and Berry finished second in its heat, and 10th in the division in 3:59.87, the second-best time in school history.

The top nine advanced to next week’s finals.

CIF Division IV

preliminaries

CARPINTERIA — Sage Hill School’s Cait Williamson and Jackie Dion both qualified in two events Saturday.

Williamson qualified eighth in the 1,600 meters in 5:20.16 and eighth in the 3,200 in 11:39.01.

Dion qualified seventh in the 400 in 58.99 and ninth in the high jump, clearing 5-2, a school record.
