The Laguna Beach High boys’ soccer team opened Orange Coast League in the past week by playing to a pair of tie scores.

In their season opener against host Godinez on Jan. 9, the Breakers settled for a 2-2 tie. On Monday against host Calvary Chapel, the Breakers scored first but ended up in a 1-1 tie.

Against Godinez, Laguna had several scoring opportunities in the final 15 minutes of regulation, but couldn’t find the net. Bryce Healy and Tommy Hopper scored goals for the Breakers.

“I knew this game was going to be a difficult one as soon as we stepped off the bus,” Laguna Coach Patrick Coyne said. “The wind was extremely strong and we still had a couple of injured players.”

In Monday’s match against Calvary Chapel, an early goal by sophomore Sammy Stinett put Laguna into the lead, which it maintained at the half.

But 15 minutes into the second half, a Laguna breakdown on its own possession allowed the Eagles to score the equalizing goal.

The two league results put Laguna at 8-1-7 overall.

The Breakers don’t return to play until 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, when they play their first league home match of the season against Estancia at Guyer Field.

“We have a well deserved nine-day break where our players can recoup and heal,” Coyne said. “We intend on carrying on our unbeaten streak in league with some wins rather than ties.

“I would like to personally invite all soccer fans from the community to come and support our boys with our home fixtures. Our league is very difficult. Each team has a different style of play and each team’s home ground has its advantages. If our boys stay focused and hungry, I’m confident we will do well.”

Laguna split its first two Orange Coast League games to end the first week of league action at 1-1.

The Breakers began league play Jan. 8 and routed host Godinez, 7-0. It was the second-widest margin victory of the season for Laguna, which blanked La Quinta, 8-0, Dec. 23.

On Tuesday, Laguna suffered a 4-3 setback to host Calvary Chapel, which shut out the Breakers, 2-0, in the second half to pull out the win. Holden Penney, Marina Paul and Maya Butler scored goals for the Breakers and Lura Hills had seven saves.
