Mailbag: Accident site needs stop signs, painted lines

Four short cul-de-sacs connect to the north side of 15th Street between Tustin and Irvine avenues, including Michael Place, the site of our community’s recent horrific tragedy. In honor of young Brock McCann, and with respect to the CR&R truck driver, we need to install four regular octagonal red stop signs at the ends of these streets where they open to 15th. Stop lines painted on the asphalt by these new signs are also necessary. Neither stop signs nor painted stripes exist on any of these cul-de-sacs as of June 4. Considering the proximity of this area to three schools, and with summer vacation approaching, these stop signs need to be installed immediately.

The passing of ‘the Greatest’

I was 15 when then-Cassius Clay first defeated Sonny Liston, the reigning heavyweight champion, in 1964. Even in my nearly all-white high school in Palo Alto my classmates and I immediately tried to “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.” Thankfully, some of us still are trying, 50-plus years later.

Ali, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, wondered if people would remember him when he passed away. As far as this 60-something father of three is concerned, the answer is a resounding yes. With this answer in hand, I have a question of my own: Will anyone ever forget “the Greatest of All Time”? I hope not.
