Construction company and architect chosen for new gym at Oak View Elementary
A long-awaited new gymnasium at Oak View Elementary School in Huntington Beach is another step closer to reality.
The Ocean View School District board of trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to select Ledesma & Meyer Construction Co. Inc. to spearhead the project alongside WLC Architects Inc.
District Supt. Carol Hansen said staff can now draw up contracts for the firms, which should be finalized by March.
The board heard presentations earlier this month from the two Rancho Cucamonga-based companies. Both have experience working with school institutions. Ledesma & Meyer also is helping Ocean View renovate infrastructure and modernize buildings as part of Measure R, a bond issue that local voters passed in November.
Construction of the new gym will begin once plans are designed and then approved by the state, which could happen this year.
The vote on the gym project follows a three-year lawsuit involving the district and Rainbow Environmental Services, a disposal company with a waste transfer facility adjacent to Oak View Elementary School and Oak View Preschool. The district’s lawsuit was settled in November, with Rainbow agreeing to provide the district with $4 million for the Oak View Elementary gym and for trees to create a barrier between the school and the waste facility.
Rainbow also will spend $18 million to enclose the trash facility and install a ventilation and filtration system to help limit noise and odors.
Currently, the funds are in an escrow account.
