Laguna Beach extends application deadline for its ‘LB Cares’ grant program for bars, restaurants
Laguna Beach announced Wednesday that it is extending the application deadline for local bars and restaurants to apply for its “LB Cares” program, which will provide a one-time grant to businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new deadline for applications is Jan. 19 at 5 p.m.
City Council members unanimously approved the appropriation of $1.4 million from the city’s reserves in December in an effort to provide relief for those facing financial hardship.
The LB Cares program provides one-time grants of $5,000 to restaurants and bars. Local retailers that have had to close in light of current health protocols can receive $3,000 and those operating at a reduced capacity can receive $2,000.
John Pietig has served as Laguna Beach city manager for a decade and, prior to that, was the city’s assistant manager for another 10 years.
Grants are given on a first-come, first-served basis.
To qualify, businesses must be compliant and pledge to remain in compliance with current California and Orange County health orders, be located in Laguna Beach, and have a business license saying so and confirm that they have experienced economic hardship due to the pandemic. Restaurants and bars must have also been ordered to transition to takeout or delivery only, or closed completely.
The grant program is not accessible for city employees, elected and appointed officials or members of their immediate family.
Submissions received prior to Jan. 5 should be notified by email on or before Thursday. Restaurant and bar applications received after the initial Jan. 5 deadline will be notified after the Jan. 19 deadline.
On Wednesday, the city also announced the launch of the Laguna Beach Business Assistance Services Program to help local businesses and nonprofits access available resources from the federal, state and local government and help determine what are the best resources to meet each business’ specific needs. These services are free.
