Orange County records 6 coronavirus deaths over two days as total cases reach 1,425

Coronavirus deaths in Orange County have increased by six in the past two days, bringing the total to 25.

The county Health Care Agency reported three deaths Thursday and three Wednesday amid volatile counts of hospitalizations and overall cases this week.

With Thursday’s update, countywide cases now stand at 1,425. That count comes from 15,942 tests.

After relatively small increases in cases Monday (nine) and Tuesday (23), the count rose by 87 on Wednesday and by 51 on Thursday.

Daily changes are preliminary and have varied widely over the past month. Monday’s nine additional cases made for the lowest day-to-day increase since seven were announced March 17, before the state’s stay-at-home order was issued.

Among the 25 people who have died, 12 were older than 65, the age group considered to be most at risk. Ten others were between 45 and 64.

Hospitalization numbers have been up and down this week. The Health Care Agency said 138 people were hospitalized with the virus Thursday, 68 of them in intensive care. That followed 104 reported hospitalizations Wednesday, 122 on Tuesday and 103 on Monday. The number of hospitals reporting coronavirus patients also has varied in that time, from 21 to 24.

Here are the latest case counts for select cities, with their numbers per 10,000 residents:

• Anaheim: 162 (4.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Santa Ana: 142 (4.2 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Irvine: 106 (3.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Huntington Beach: 97 (4.8 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Newport Beach: 90 (10.3 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Laguna Beach: 36 (15.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Costa Mesa: 28 (2.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
• Fountain Valley: 20 (3.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
