Will you pay more for weed than your friends? It may depend on your city’s taxes.
Following California’s legalization of recreational marijuana, cities throughout the state began imposing taxes on cannabis within their borders — on top of sales tax and a state excise tax of 15%.
Last year in Carson, voters taxed sales of recreational cannabis products 18%. The neighboring town of Lynwood has a tax of just 2.5%.
This means someone spending $100 will pay $43 in taxes in Carson and $29 in Lynwood, about five miles away.
