Our digital Día de Muertos altar celebrates your loved ones
Updated
Día de Muertos is around the corner. The holiday, celebrated in Mexico and parts of Latin America and the United States, is one of remembrance and community. It’s an opportunity to spend time with the memories of those who came before us. And though death is at the forefront, Día de Muertos is also a celebration of life.
The traditional way of celebrating is by making an ofrenda — an offering that often features a photo of the person being remembered, candles, foods and items specific to them, cempasúchiles (marigolds), papel picado and calaveras (sugar skulls).
Inspired by those found at Grand Park and the Hollywood Forever Cemetery around this time of the year, we've created our own communal digital altar. We asked readers to create their own ofrendas by uploading a photo of a loved one they'd like to remember and sharing a memory or an anecdote about them. We received more than 1,000 submissions.
If you want to build an ofrenda at home, here’s a helpful how-to guide with tips from Día de Muertos altar experts.

You were a cherished friend. The virus took you way too soon. Your love, friendship, tenacity, and commitment to social justice remains with all of us who loved you. Hasta la victoria siempre!

A mi querida Nonna
Her need to bring out dessert the second dinner ended. Her ritual of standing in the driveway waving & yelling "BYE!!!" until we were around the corner. I'll long for all these things and little memories, but mostly I'm thankful.

My Mom and Dad raised 4 kids and lived most of their lives in NW Iowa - with a year or so before WWII in Los Angeles while my Dad worked on ships on Terminal Island. Every spring she'd say we're going to pack up and move to California, but we never did. Instead, I did. So she'd come out and visit me and we'd see all the special places unique to the LA area. Back in Iowa, she was an active Democrat and very very proud of this photo of her and Michele Obama when Barack Obama was campaigning for the presidency.
