The two candidates on the November ballot for lieutenant governor have raised a combined $5.4 million. About 98% of that amount went to Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis.
Who has raised the most?
Kounalakis, a Democrat, is running for her second term as lieutenant governor and led in the primary with 53% of the vote. Kounalakis has received 1,846 donations averaging $2,860 each.
Angela Underwood Jacobs, a Republican, is a former city council member and deputy mayor of Lancaster in Los Angeles County. Underwood Jacobs has received 94 donations averaging $1,260 each.
Kounalakis began fundraising in November 2018 and has seen steady contributions throughout this election cycle. Underwood Jacobs started her fundraising earlier this year and has raised a small fraction in contrast to her competition.
Where is the money coming from?
Kounalakis’ support comes largely from Sacramento, Los Angeles and the Bay Area. While Underwood Jacobs received many fewer contributions, the ones she did get were primarily from Los Angeles County.
Who is supporting the candidates?
Candidate committees for the lieutenant governor’s race have contribution limits of $16,200. There were 64 donors who contributed the maximum amount to Kounalakis, and none who contributed the maximum to Underwood Jacobs.
Kounalakis’ biggest donor has been herself, with a $400,000 contribution and a $100,000 loan. Candidates are allowed to contribute over the limit to their own campaigns. Several family members also gave large amounts. Other large contributions came from PACs representing union and labor interests of teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, healthcare and domestic workers, engineers, plumbers and electricians.
Underwood Jacobs’ biggest contributions have come from her own campaign committee from a previous run for Congress for $30,000 total.
How is the money being spent?
In addition to the amount Kounalakis’s candidate committee raised, it also has $232,000 in funds, including transfers from previous committees and other miscellaneous transactions. Kounalakis has spent the bulk of her funds on campaign consultants, professional services like legal and accounting, and fundraising events.
In addition to the amount Underwood Jacobs’s candidate committee raised, it also has $32,700 in funds, including transfers from previous committees and other miscellaneous transactions. Most of Underwood Jacobs’ funds have gone to campaign literature, consultants, and phone banks.
What other groups are supporting the candidates?
Outside committees have spent $138,700 in support of Kounalakis, including $16,000 from the California Democratic Party. There were no outside committees spending on behalf of Underwood Jacobs.
