Readers React: A former Times reporter on meeting Glenn Frey: ‘I was stunned’

To the editor: Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey was an avid reader of The Times, particularly the Sports section. I learned that when, by chance, I got to meet him backstage after an Eagles performance at a cable television convention in Anaheim in 1994, shortly after the band had reunited. (“Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey dies at 67: chief architect of band’s vocal and instrumental blend,” Jan. 18)

I was covering the convention for The Times. My beat at the newspaper for many years was sports television. I had a weekly column that appeared in the Sports section on Fridays.

Amazingly, Frey seemed more excited about meeting me than I was about meeting him. He recited a number of opinions I had expressed, going on and on for maybe five minutes. I was stunned. I really couldn’t believe this was happening.

I recall Frey explaining his enthusiasm. “If I wasn’t a musician, I would have wanted to be a sports broadcaster,” he said. “I would have loved to have been a radio sports talk show host.”
