Letters: What’s behind a trust

Re “An all-male college’s future,” Editorial, May 25

So the trustees of Deep Springs College want to start enrolling women despite the founding financial trust that established it as a male-only school. I’m sure the trustor didn’t mean “mankind.”

As these trusts continue to be reinterpreted, more and more generous people will rethink the final disposition of their funds. The Rhodes Trust was reinterpreted to include women, and UCLA is considering violating the wishes of a woman who donated a Japanese garden.

You state, “It is up to the school and its community to decide whether the time has come to open the doors to women.”

I beg to differ; it is up to the courts as to whether this trust can be violated.
