Impact of the 2012 hurricane season
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) counted 19 named storms in 2012’s hurricane season, including devastating hurricanes Sandy and Isaac. A NOAA release noted the Atlantic has seen “above normal” hurricane activity since 1995, a trend the organization said is ongoing due to warmer Atlantic Ocean temperatures, an enhanced West African monsoon, and reduced vertical wind shear.
NEW YORK -- Hurricane force winds could cause trouble for the cranes at the site of the former World Trade Center. The streets of downtown Manhattan are almost empty as Hurricane Sandy approaches. Subways and trains have been halted and parts of Manhattan are under a mandatory evacuation order.
