1 dead and several injured in stabbing and shooting attack at Denver motorcycle expo

One person was killed and several others wounded in a shooting and stabbing at the Denver Coliseum on Saturday afternoon during the Colorado Motorcycle Expo, authorities said.

At least nine people were taken to local hospitals after the attack shortly before 1 p.m., according to a tweet from Denver Health. Denver Health Medical Center was on lockdown, and officers were stationed at the hospitals, according to Raquel Lopez, a spokeswoman for Denver police.

No arrests have been made in connection with the attack, Lopez said.

During a briefing at the scene, Lopez said there had been shots fired and at least one stabbing at the Coliseum, but she did not say how many were injured or their condition.

Off-duty officers were at the event, she said, “So we were able to get officers here quickly and get our victims to the hospital.”

No officers were injured in the attack, she said.

Lopez did not say what motivated the attack. A witness, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, told the Denver Post that the disturbance was sparked by rival biker gangs.

The Coliseum was not evacuated after the attack, Lopez said.

“The event is still going, but we do have officers in there,” she said.

Police plan to post further updates on Twitter.

Organizers of the Motorcycle Expo have not announced whether the show will continue as scheduled on Sunday. The event is billed as one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the country, including an indoor motorcycle swap meet with more than 800 booths, a bike show, live music, wet T-shirt contest, on-site tattooing and piercing.
