California Assembly returns from summer recess
They’re baaack.
The state Assembly returns from its summer recess Monday with a full agenda of business to accomplish before it breaks for the year Sept. 13.
The Assembly has yet to act on a package of a dozen gun control bills approved by the state Senate in response to the mass killing last year at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
Another contentious measure pending action in the Assembly would regulate the use of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the production of oil and gas in California.
Assembly members will also consider removing tax-exempt status from nonprofit groups including the Boy Scouts that don’t allow gays to be members.
Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) is expected to give a hint of his house’s direction in a media briefing this morning.
Because of a scheduling mixup, the Assembly started its summer recess a week before the Senate.
As a result, the Assembly has the Capitol to itself this week. The Senate returns Aug. 12.
