Videos of skateboarders on freeways spark CHP investigation
Videos on social media of young people skateboarding on freeways in Los Angeles and San Diego counties have emerged in recent weeks, prompting the California Highway Patrol to investigate.
"We are aware of skateboarding on the freeways in downtown and parts of L.A. There has been social media and there have been hashtags appearing with a challenge to skateboarders," said CHP Officer Jose Nunez. "These are not safe places and weren't designed for that kind of thing.... This is an enforceable action and if we can identify any one or vehicle action will be taken against those individuals."
In several videos, young people jump out of cars and skateboard through traffic.
Nunez said last year the agency saw a spate of bicyclists on freeways. "They would ride between ramps in the slow lane," he said.
The skateboard videos were first reported by LAist.
