Pilot killed in plane crash near Van Nuys is identified as Malibu man
The pilot of a light sport plane was killed Tuesday when his aircraft crashed into a building east of Van Nuys Airport, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has identified the pilot of a light sport plane who was killed Tuesday when his aircraft crashed against a building near the Van Nuys Airport.
The pilot was Arthur Newman, 78, of Malibu, coroner’s officials said. An autopsy is pending.
Newman was practicing touch-and-go landings at the airport before the crash Tuesday afternoon, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
The touch-and-go procedure requires a pilot to land on a runway briefly and then immediately take off again, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn.
On his last touch-and-go run, Newman made a hard landing, said Diana Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles World Airports.
Television news footage showed a damaged power pole and the wreckage of the plane along the side of a building in the 16000 block of West Hart Street. Airport officials have temporarily closed its 4,000-foot training runway.
Authorities think Newman was flying an Arion Lightning kit aircraft, Gregor said.
