2 people ID’d in deadly Huntington Beach crash that split car in two
The two people killed Monday when the Honda Civic they were in slammed into a palm tree in Huntington Beach have been identified by coroner’s officials.
Robert Ruiz, 19, and Kiany Garcia, 17, both from Irvine, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 5:21 a.m. near Beach Boulevard and Main Street, the Huntington Beach Independent reported.
The Civic, driven by Ruiz, appeared to be headed west on Ellis Avenue when it failed to make the slight left turn onto Main, striking a palm tree in front of Denny’s and splitting the car in two, Huntington Police Lt. Gary Faust said.
Ruiz may have been driving too fast to make the turn, Faust said, although the investigation into the crash remained ongoing.
