A pilot was killed Monday when her plane crashed near Hawthorne Municipal Airport, officials said.

An Airborne XT-912 departed the airport in the 12000 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. It crashed and burned about noon in the 3600 block of West 120th Street, said Lt. Gary Tomatani of the Hawthorne Police Department.

The pilot was treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Initial reports indicated that the weight-shift-control plane had struck a vehicle, Tomatani said. When police arrived, they found no vehicles in the area, he said.

Firefighters reported that smoke was coming out of the aircraft, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Keith Mora said.

The crash is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board, police said.
