Giant sinkhole opens at La Habra condo complex, prompting evacuations
A massive sinkhole opened between two condominium buildings in La Habra late Wednesday, prompting a handful of homes to be placed under voluntary evacuation.
The sinkhole, which was nearly 100 feet long, was reported in a grassy greenbelt in the 950 block of West Imperial Highway about 10:45 p.m. after an underground flood-control channel collapsed, said Shannon Widor, a spokesman for Orange County Public Works.
The channel doesn’t belong to the county or the city, so officials are trying to identify who owns it, Widor said. It is not clear why it collapsed.
Two pine trees fell when the ground crumbled and are leaning on the roof of one of the condominium buildings. Authorities placed three homes under voluntary evacuation orders because of the danger the trees posed, KABC reported.
