A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenager has pleaded not guilty.

John Augustus Rose II, 43, entered his plea Monday and is scheduled to be back in court Sept. 27, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. He was charged with 17 felony counts, including lewd acts on a child and sexual penetration by a foreign object, among others.

Rose allegedly knew the family of the girl. Deputy Dist. Atty. Rosa Alarcon said in a statement that Rose allegedly began a sexual relationship with the 15-year-old girl beginning in March and continuing through June.

Records show Rose — a 22-year veteran — was awarded the Medal of Valor for the daring rescue he and another deputy made during the Curve fire in the San Gabriel Mountains that burned 21,000 acres.

Most recently, Rose was assigned to the Community Oriented Policing Services Bureau, which aims to help residents by taking a “holistic approach to problem-oriented policing,” according to the department.

He was relieved of duty without pay Thursday.
