Sex offender accused of cutting GPS device is captured
A convicted sex offender accused of cutting his GPS device and making dozens of threatening and obscene phone calls to the family of his 80-year-old victim was captured without incident, authorities said Wednesday evening.
Dennis Michael McKenzie, 55, was taken into custody about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of South Palm Canyon in Palm Springs, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
Authorities were alerted after someone saw McKenzie’s photo in a news report, the department said.
McKenzie was convicted in San Bernardino County and paroled to a halfway house in Long Beach before he cut his GPS device, authorities said.
This month, McKenzie “made more than 50 threatening and obscene phone calls to the family of an 80-year-old victim whom he brutally raped in 2004,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
He was convicted on April 8, 2004, of sexual penetration with foreign object with force or fear and elder abuse, according to online San Bernardino County Superior Court records.
